Scholarships Totaling $380,000 Awarded at International Women in Aviation Conference

Women in Aviation, International announced scholarship winners at the annual International Women in Aviation Conference held recently in Orlando. Scholarships totaled $380,000, a 33% increase from the 1998 Conference, and were awarded to 38 women. In addition, interviews for a major airline were also awarded.

Scholarships are awarded each year at the Conference. Selection factors include: achievements, attitude toward self and others, commitment to success, dedication to career, financial need, motivation, reliability, responsibility and teamwork. Each year, WAI strives to offer additional scholarships to suit the needs of the organization’s diverse membership. The 1999 scholarships were awarded in the following areas: flight training (private pilot, flight instructor, type ratings), maintenance and aviation management.

According to WAI Scholarship Committee Chair Mary Ann Eiff, "We are thrilled to be able to offer scholarships for these deserving women and grateful to all of the aviation organizations who support our effort to encourage women to consider a career in aviation." Eiff added that many companies, including Northwest Airlines and American Airlines, awarded additional type ratings at the Conference because they found several of the candidates to be equally qualified and deserving.
